Media Release - Country Regional Network wins major safety award

John Holland has won a major rail industry award for keeping communities safe at level crossings on the Country Regional Network.

John Holland operates and maintains the CRN on behalf of Transport for NSW and last night was recognised with the Australasian Rail Industry TrackSAFE award for its stewardship of the network.

CRN CEO Matt Jones thanked the team involved in the management of level crossings, who developed a risk-ranking tool and increased education and awareness to keep communities, customers and rail workers safe.

“We take our role as stewards of the Country Regional Network seriously, and we have worked proactively to reduce risks so that people are not hurt at level crossings,” Mr Jones said.

“A better risk rating tool and using technology to assess safety issues has allowed us to make more informed decisions on level crossing upgrades.”

There are more than 1,100 level crossings on the CRN, which covers more than 2,300kms of operational rail lines and more than 3,100kms of non-operational lines.

John Holland Executive General Manager- Rail, Steve Butcher congratulated the CRN team on their win.

“This award is great recognition for our team and their commitment to caring for their communities and their colleagues,” Mr Butcher said.

TrackSAFE Foundation executive director Naomi Frauenfelder said the approach taken by John Holland on level crossings was proactive and stopped incidents from occurring.

“This innovative Plan broadens the lenses on level crossing safety by actively pre-empting and assessing risk through modelling data and technology in order to implement improvement strategies to avoid incidents from occurring,” Ms Frauenfelder said.
